Ready to govern

Dear Prajwal,

Today I announced that with the support of Rob Oakeshott, Tony Windsor, Andrew Wilkie and Adam Bandt from the Australian Greens, Labor is prepared to govern Australia.

This election was one of the closest our nation has ever seen.  It told us that the next government would be held more accountable than ever before and that there would be higher expectations of transparency and reform.

With this in mind I began the task of forming government optimistic about our future.  As I've said many times before – the best days of this country are in front of us, not behind us.

Ours will be a government with just one purpose – to serve the Australian people.

My government will be true to our principles and our beliefs, but we will also be pragmatic in developing effective policies and programs on the major issues that we face. You can read the Labor's agreements with the Independents and the Australian Greens, here.

We've weathered the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression. Our economy is the envy of the world. We have an opportunity to improve health services, invest in education, build the National Broadband Network.  Now we can make progress in combating climate change and deepen our security relationship with our allies.

Finally, I want to say thank you to Australians for their patience and support as our democracy has been tested over the past two weeks.

I will always be working for this nation's future and stand ready to form the next Australian Government.

Thank you.

Julia Gillard
Prime Minister
